Creating Opportunities Beyond the Court

As HLS Healthcare expands its support of Victorian wheelchair basketball, the focus extends beyond the game and into the environments that help make participation possible.

Recently, members of the HLS Healthcare team attended Basketball Victoria’s jersey launch for the Victoria Marvels and Victoria Wonders wheelchair basketball teams at the State Basketball Centre in Knox. It was an opportunity to meet athletes, coaches, families, volunteers and supporters, and to witness first-hand the passion, commitment and sense of community that continues to drive wheelchair basketball across Victoria.

The event also marked an exciting milestone in HLS Healthcare’s partnership with Basketball Victoria. Building on our previous support of Basketball Victoria’s Junior State Wheelchair Basketball Team, HLS Healthcare is pleased to expand its partnership to the Victoria Marvels and Victoria Wonders programs, supporting opportunities for athletaes at every stage of the pathway.

For us, the partnership is about more than supporting a team or a season. It reflects a shared belief that when barriers are removed and opportunities are created, people can achieve extraordinary things, whether that means competing at an elite level, representing their state, or simply discovering a lifelong connection to sport and community.

Watching the athletes train and connect with one another, one thing quickly became clear. The game itself is only part of the story. Behind every athlete is a network of people and support systems that help make participation possible, including families who provide encouragement, coaches who invest countless hours, volunteers who help programs thrive, and communities that create opportunities for people to belong, compete and grow.

Spending time with the wheelchair basketball community reinforced something we see every day through our work in accessibility and assistive technology. Participation starts with access. When accessibility is considered from the outset, people can focus less on navigating barriers and more on enjoying the activities, experiences and communities that matter most to them.

This is why accessible infrastructure plays such an important role in sporting venues, public facilities and community spaces across Australia. Whether someone is attending a game, participating in a community event or spending time with family and friends, the design of a space can have a direct impact on whether they feel welcomed, included and able to participate fully.

Facilities such as Changing Places help ensure more people can confidently participate in community life. For many individuals, families and carers, access to appropriate facilities can make participation easier, more comfortable and more achievable. These spaces provide the support needed for people to engage in their communities and enjoy the same opportunities as everyone else. Through its work as a preferred supplier of Changing Places facilities in stadiums across Australia, HLS Healthcare has seen first-hand the difference accessible facilities can make for individuals, families and carers.

At HLS Healthcare, we believe accessibility is about more than meeting requirements. It is about creating opportunities to participate in sport, connect with community, and build confidence, independence and belonging. That belief is one of the reasons we are proud to support Basketball Victoria and the Victoria Marvels and Victoria Wonders programs.

The athletes, coaches, volunteers and families involved in wheelchair basketball demonstrate what can happen when people are given the opportunity to participate, challenge themselves and succeed. Their stories are a powerful reminder that inclusion does not begin on game day. It begins with creating environments where everyone has the opportunity to take part.

As the season gets underway, we look forward to following the journey of both teams and celebrating the achievements of the broader wheelchair basketball community throughout the year.
